FlightGlobal Website

Improving user experience across all areas of the site to create a seamless experience for all visitors

Overview

FlightGlobal is the global aviation community’s primary source of news, data, insight, knowledge and expertise. The group grew its portfolio significantly through the acquisition of data intelligence companies in the aviation industry and has recently changed its name to Cirium.

The Challenge

Create a seamless experience for all visitors

FlightGlobal website was to be re-designed in response to the company’s need to:

  • Promote FlightGlobal as a heavyweight in the aviation data and analytics business and allow sales to effectively communicate and promote FlightGlobal’s solution capabilities
  • Provide guided journeys to users and help them find the right solutions to their problems
  • Improve user experience across all areas of the site to create a seamless experience for all visitors

Measure of Success

  • Deliver > 306 data enquiries a month with 10% from sector solutions

My Role

I led the design of the website including information architecture, user task flows, wireframes, UI and visual design. I collaborated with a digital designer on creating imagery that combined data and aviation elements.

I partnered with a product manager, researcher and a content strategist to uncover insights and translate concepts into features that address customer behaviours and motivations. I evangelised customer goals and balanced business goals.

Research & Discovery

The discovery phase was a quick, high‐intensity effort that allowed us to define project milestones, audit the existing work, review the competitor landscape, understand our client’s vision, and begin research into user needs, behaviours and pain‐points. We also kicked off a technical discovery phase to understand feasibility and constraints.

The Design Process

The website was an ongoing project. It was divided into manageable ‘releases’ and each ‘release’ was designed using an agile approach.

For a more holistic approach to the design, we invested time in the beginning of the project in reviewing the website’s UI elements and creating a toolset of consistent functionality components that could be used throughout the process.

The toolset

  • Axure was used for prototyping interactions and creating mid fidelity wireframes
  • Sketch was used for visual design and to capture all UI design elements that could then be shared
  • Zeplin was used to successfully bridged a front end gap between the UX and development teams
  • Trello and JIRA was responsible for keeping track of progress and used as a point of communication and reference for stakeholders

Written rational UX decision log

As part of a UI design style guide I created a document where I catalogued all key decisions and reasoning behind each element of the user interface to ensure that all the signed off decisions were concrete before implementation.

The Solution

Bringing It All To Life

The gallery below shows some of the designs for desktop, mobile and tablet.

The interface design strives to be confident. It does not contain UI‐bling or unnecessary elements. I opted for clear, readable typography – choosing colours with high contrast to increase legibility. The design is uncluttered, clean, large and well-spaced. All the design decisions help to exude a sense of confidence in the brand and products.
